🔎 Astra: our experience and the early reactions

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s new AI model. It can help with writing and research, build software, and carry out tasks in apps.

👀 Our experience with Astra

We’ve been using Astra, and our experience is mixed. Sometimes it does an impressive job. On other tasks, it feels only a little better than Sol, OpenAI’s previous model.

We think it is worth trying. Just don’t expect every task to feel like a big upgrade.

What people are sharing

The 3D demos are getting plenty of attention. In the post below, a creator shows animated trains built with Astra. It has picked up more than 10,000 likes and 190 replies.

Beyond the demos

Writing results are less clear. The team behind the test below ranked Astra below Sol at matching their own writing style. That is one team’s test, not a verdict on all writing.

At Every, a publication about AI and work, the experience was different: its CEO mistook Astra’s draft for a colleague’s writing.

There is evidence of progress outside 3D, too. Independent AI testing company Artificial Analysis found Astra completed more difficult computer tasks than Sol.

🔎 3 Tools Worth Discovering

Wabi: make an app just for you

Want a shared packing list, a game for friends, or a tracker that works your way? Describe it, and Wabi builds a small app. You can change it by asking, or remix something another person made.

Available on iPhone and Android. Free to download, but some features cost extra.

Recall: remember what you read

Reading more is easy. Remembering it is harder. Recall turns articles, videos and PDFs into quizzes and brings questions back over time. Useful when you are learning a subject and want more than a folder of forgotten links.

The free plan has limits. AI can make mistakes, so check quiz answers against the original material.

LingoLooper: practise a language out loud

Know the words, but freeze when someone speaks to you? Talk with AI characters in virtual cafes and parks. LingoLooper suggests phrases when you get stuck and gives feedback on your conversations.

Available on iPhone and Android. Your first few conversations are free. After that, you need a paid subscription.

See you next week,
